Will AI Replace Web Developers? A 2030 Forecast
In August 2026, Anthropic published a set of economic scenarios for how AI reshapes work. Their method is refreshingly concrete. Instead of asking "is this job safe or gone," they represent every job as a bundle of tasks, and ask what AI does to each task: leave it unchanged, augment it, automate it, or create a new task that did not exist before. Their worked example is a nurse. We liked it, so we did the same thing for the job we know best: the people who build and run websites.
The honest headline up front: web development is one of the most AI-exposed jobs there is. In most jobs, AI can take over only a slice of the day, and the core of the work stays human. For a web developer, the automatable slice is the core craft itself. Writing HTML, CSS and JavaScript is exactly what today's models are best at. That single fact drives everything below.

The heart of it: AI can't sit in the room and be trusted with the client's reputation.

Where the web developer workforce lands in 2030
Anthropic's scenarios come with a chart called "Where workers are in 2030." It sorts workers into those still in their field, those who moved to other occupations, and those in transition. Their published figures are for knowledge workers as a whole. In the Substantial scenario (AI doing half of all knowledge work by 2030) they land on roughly 59.7% still in knowledge work, 39.6% moved to other occupations, and 0.7% still relocating.
Web development is not an average knowledge job, though. It sits at the exposed end, because its core output is code. So when you apply that same chart to web developers specifically, the mix tilts toward more movement than the average. Pick a scenario and watch it shift.

The scenario names and definitions are theirs; the web-developer-specific splits above are our extrapolation of their framework, not figures Anthropic published. They are meant to show direction and rough shape, not a precise prediction.
Read "still in web dev" as the job still exists, but it is now the augment-and-orchestrate version from the task chart above, not the 2024 hand-coding version. Even in the mildest scenario, the day-to-day looks different from today.
What it actually means for web developers
1. The job does not vanish, it inverts. The valuable part stops being "can you write the code" and becomes "can you decide what is right, and be trusted with it." Typing was the moat. Now taste, client trust and judgement are the moat.
2. Fewer people do far more. Because one AI-augmented developer ships what used to take a team, demand for hours of hand-coding drops even if demand for websites rises. More sites, fewer coders per site. That squeeze is the "moved to adjacent work" number showing up as real people.
3. The bottom of the ladder gets cut first. The automatable bucket (boilerplate, standard pages, simple fixes) is exactly the work junior developers learned on. When that is automated, the entry path narrows. This is the sharpest near-term risk, well before 2030.
4. The safe ground is up the stack. The unchanged and new-task buckets: client relationships, brand judgement, orchestration, security and quality guardrails, and running many sites at once. A developer who becomes the trusted operator of many AI-run sites is on the resilient side of every scenario. One who stays a pure code-typist is not.
