Pressless vs ShiftPress: Build a New Site, or Move the One You Have?
Most comparison articles are written about a competitor that does something quite different. This one isn't. Pressless does a version of what we do, does it well, and describes it in language we could have written ourselves. So the useful thing here is not to argue about who is better in the abstract, but to be precise about the handful of places where the two products genuinely diverge, and to say plainly which situations suit them better than us.
What the two products agree on
It is worth listing this first, because it is most of the list:
- Static HTML, no database, no plugins. Both build real pages rather than assembling them on every request, which is why both load fast and neither has a plugin stack to patch.
- Cloudflare's edge network. Both deploy globally, both include SSL and a custom domain on paid plans.
- Chat is the editor. Both replace the page builder with a conversation. You say what should change, the AI does it, you publish.
- You get the code. Pressless offers export of real HTML, CSS and JavaScript on any paid plan. ShiftPress puts your site in a GitHub repository that belongs to you from day one. Different mechanism, same principle, and we cover ours in no lock-in: your site belongs to you.
- The same enemy. Both of us are, in the end, aimed at people tired of WordPress upkeep.
If a comparison table ended here it would be a tie. It doesn't end here.
The fork: a new site, or the one you already have
Pressless leads with a prompt. "Describe your business, get a real website." You type a sentence about a bakery in Brooklyn or a dental practice in Austin, and the AI designs and writes a complete site around it, with 20-plus starter templates if you would rather begin from one. It is a genuinely good pitch for someone starting from nothing, and their showcase backs it up. They also offer a WordPress migration: you paste your URL, the AI crawls and extracts, and it rebuilds your site as a static site.
ShiftPress leads with the site you already have. The migration is not a feature next to the builder, it is the product. We copy your existing site faithfully: the same pages, the same design, the same URLs, redirects generated where an address genuinely has to change, and a page-by-page comparison against the old site before anything goes live. The point is that nothing changes for Google or for the people who already have your links bookmarked. That process is spelled out in migrating WordPress to a static site and in moving off WordPress without losing rankings.
Why this matters more than it sounds: a generated site is a new site. New copy, new structure, often new URLs. If you have no rankings, that is a fresh start and entirely fine. If you have ten years of search history, a handful of pages that bring in most of your enquiries, and inbound links pointing at specific addresses, a fresh start is the expensive option. Rebuilding your site as something new and rebuilding it as the same thing are different jobs, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying.
We do also build sites from scratch, and from a design file, at build a new site. We are just honest that it is our second act, not our headline.
Page limits, and why they bite on real business sites
Pressless publishes page counts per plan: 5 pages on Personal at 9 dollars a month, 15 pages on Business at 29 dollars, and Professional at 79 dollars described as unlimited sites. For a bakery, a coffee shop or a one-service freelancer, five pages is genuinely enough and nine dollars is a very sharp price.
Now count the pages on a real established business site. A law firm with a page per practice area. A clinic with a page per treatment. A tax advisor with services, team, locations, news. These sites are routinely thirty to eighty pages, and most of those pages exist because someone searches for exactly that thing. On ShiftPress the paid plans do not cap how many pages your site has. What is priced is how many pages we bring across for you: 149 euros for up to 10, 299 for up to 50, 599 for up to 250, and a quote above that. After that you add pages by asking for them.
AI credits versus AI changes
Pressless meters AI in credits: 250 a month on Personal, 900 on Business, 2,400 on Professional, with top-up packs when you run out. They also tier the model, using Claude Sonnet on Personal and Opus on the higher plans. Credits are a defensible design, and if you are a heavy user the top-ups mean you are never blocked.
ShiftPress counts whole changes rather than credits: 5 a month on Start, 30 on Smart, 100 on Growth, with Pro quoted. A change is a change, whether it turned out to be one paragraph or an afternoon of back and forth, and the same editing agent runs on every plan rather than a cheaper model on the cheaper tier. Planning a change is free, so you can talk through what you want before spending anything.
Neither model is objectively right. Credits are more precise; whole changes are easier to predict when you are not technical and have no intuition for what a credit costs. Pick the one you would rather explain to your accountant.
Europe is the plainest difference
Pressless is a US product, in English, priced in dollars. ShiftPress is built in Europe for European businesses:
- Data hosted in the EU, in Frankfurt.
- A data processing agreement you can accept online, rather than an email thread with a legal team, which is what a German customer's own compliance checklist tends to ask for.
- The whole product in German, informal and human, not a machine-translated interface: the dashboard, the emails, the support and this blog.
If you are in Austin, none of that is worth anything to you. If you are in Hamburg and your customers' data protection officer asks where the site is hosted, it is the whole conversation.
What happens after launch
Both products will get you a fast site you can edit. The question a year later is what else the site is doing for you. Pressless covers the essentials well: contact forms and newsletter signup, automatic meta tags, sitemaps and structured data, team roles and agency pricing.
ShiftPress is built to keep running the business side after go-live: a lead inbox for form submissions, built-in booking instead of an embedded scheduler, document downloads, a website chat widget with human takeover, blog autopilot, social posting, A/B experiments, translations with the hreflang wiring done for you, internal-link tooling and SEO audits. Whether that is an advantage or just more surface area depends on how much of it you would actually use. If your site is a brochure that rarely changes, it is more product than you need and you should weigh the cheaper entry price accordingly.

Where Pressless is the better choice
Genuinely, and not as a formality:
- You have no website yet. Their whole product is aimed at going from a sentence to a live site, and there is nothing of yours to preserve.
- Your site is small and will stay small. Five good pages for nine dollars a month is hard to argue with.
- You want to try before committing. Browsing and generating without a card, then a seven-day trial, is a friendlier on-ramp than a migration decision.
- You are in the US and want a US product. EU hosting and German support are not selling points for you, and dollar pricing is simpler.
- You want to start from a template. Twenty-plus starter designs is a real head start if you have no idea what you want.
Where ShiftPress is the better choice
- You already have a site that works. Rankings, links, a page structure people find. The move should keep them, not restart them.
- Your site is bigger than a brochure. Thirty or eighty pages, most of them earning their keep in search.
- You are in Europe. EU hosting, an online DPA, and a product and support that speak German.
- You want the site to do work after launch. Leads, bookings, documents, blog autopilot, translations, experiments and SEO tooling in one subscription.
- You would rather not think about credits. Whole changes, free planning, one predictable bill.
If you are an agency
Both of us sell to agencies, and both of us are answering the same complaint: client sites are profitable to build and unprofitable to maintain. Pressless offers discounted agency pricing and team roles. ShiftPress for agencies approaches it from the migration side, so an existing client site can move without a redesign conversation, and once three client sites run on it you can join the partner network and get paid work routed your way. The wider economics are in web agency as a service versus a traditional agency.

The bottom line
We are not going to tell you Pressless is bad, because it isn't, and anyone who reads both sites will work that out in thirty seconds. It is a well-made product with a sharp entry price, aimed squarely at someone who needs a good-looking site to exist by Friday. If that is your situation, take the trial and enjoy it.
The reason we exist is the other situation: you already have a site, it already brings you work, and the thing you want is not a new website but the same one without the WordPress tax. That is a different job, and it is the only job we do. If your site has real pages that real people find in search, start by seeing it move across intact.
