AI and the German Website Builders: WordPress, IONOS, STRATO, Jimdo
Every website platform in Germany now advertises AI. Click through the marketing and you will find roughly the same promise on each one: describe your business, get a website. That promise is real, and it is also narrower than it sounds. The useful question is not "does this builder have AI" but "what does its AI actually touch, and on which day of my website's life?"
Three kinds of website AI, and only one of them is rare
It helps to separate three things that all get called AI on a pricing page.
Generator AI builds the first draft. You answer a few questions and get pages, layout and placeholder-quality copy. This is where nearly all builder AI lives, and it is genuinely useful once: on day one.
Assistant AI helps you while you work. It writes a paragraph, rewrites a headline, invents an image, drafts a meta description, flags a missing alt text. Handy, but you are still the one clicking through the editor, placing the block and pressing save.
Agent AI operates the site. You describe a change in plain language, it reads the real page, makes the edit, shows you what changed and publishes it once you approve. This is the one people picture when they say "an AI website", and it is the one almost nobody in this list ships to normal customers.
WordPress: the most AI activity, the most assembly required
WordPress has the largest AI ecosystem of the four, because it has the largest everything. Plugins like Jetpack AI, Elementor AI, Divi AI and the AI features in Rank Math and Yoast put drafting and SEO help inside the editor. Automattic's experimental Telex goes further and turns a prompt into a working custom block, packaged as a plugin you install.
The more interesting movement is in core. WordPress 6.9 added an Abilities API, a standard way for plugins to register a capability with typed inputs, outputs and a permission check. The separate MCP Adapter plugin then exposes those abilities over the Model Context Protocol, so an AI client like Claude can discover and call them. That is the foundation of agent AI, and it is a serious piece of engineering.
It is also, today, plumbing for developers. The official guidance is blunt about the trade: treat every connected AI client as a logged-in user, keep permission callbacks tight, prefer read-only abilities for anything public, log everything. If you run a five-page site for a dental practice, none of that is a Tuesday afternoon task. We go deeper on this gap in WordPress and AI, and on one concrete attempt to wire an agent into WordPress in connecting Claude to WordPress.
IONOS MyWebsite: the broadest generation toolkit
IONOS has leaned hard into generator AI. You give it a company name, an industry and a short description, and it produces a homepage plus a handful of subpages in several design directions; you pick one and keep editing. On top of that sit an AI image generator, an AI SEO text generator for headlines and page copy, automatic translation into dozens of languages, and the rankingCoach integration for ongoing SEO tasks.
Two things to keep in mind. First, the AI features are tiered, and so are the page limits, so the plan that makes the AI worth having is rarely the entry plan. Second, all of it points at creation. Once the site exists, you are back in a click-and-drag editor doing the work yourself. If you are weighing the platform itself rather than its AI, we compared it in IONOS website builder alternatives.
STRATO: the same idea, from the same house
STRATO's builder offers an AI website generator that turns a few inputs into a first draft with text and layout, plus an AI text optimiser for tightening what is already there, and AI features in its marketing tools for SEO and visibility. If that sounds like a close relative of the IONOS toolkit, there is a reason: STRATO has belonged to the same corporate group as IONOS since 2017.
For a German small business the appeal is real and it is not mainly about AI: German hosting, German support, German invoices, predictable prices. The AI is a helper inside that package. It writes and suggests. It does not run your site. One customer who left it for exactly that reason is in our STRATO builder case study; the options and the move itself are in STRATO website builder alternatives, and if you are moving only a STRATO domain, the steps are in connecting a STRATO domain.
Jimdo: furthest into chat, still mostly about starting
Jimdo built its Dolphin editor around AI from the start: answer a short questionnaire about your goal, style and colours, and it assembles a site. In 2026 Jimdo added an AI business advisor and a Jimdo app inside ChatGPT, so you can begin a website from a conversation you are already having with an assistant.
That is the most modern-feeling story of the German group, and it is worth taking seriously. It is still anchored on getting started and on business advice around the site, rather than on operating the pages you already have. Ask it to update the price list on your services page next March and you are back in the editor.
"Jimdo advertises AI, but when I log in I cannot see any of it."
- Maren S., Stauferlandtanne
That reaction is common, and it is not a misunderstanding. Most of the AI sits in the moment a site is created, so for someone whose site already exists it is largely invisible in day-to-day use. The features are real. They were simply spent before you arrived.
Brilliant for a business that does not exist yet
Line the four up and the pattern is hard to miss: this AI is built for the founder staring at a blank page. You have a name, an idea and no content, and twenty minutes later you have a website. For a new practice, a new agency, a new shop, that is real value at a fair price, and it is the reason these products sell.
Now picture the other customer. A company that has been trading for twelve years. Forty pages. Eight years of blog posts that still bring in enquiries. A price list, team profiles, references, case studies, opening hours. Rankings it earned rather than bought, and customers who know their way around the site. That owner does not want a new website. They want this website modernised: a current design, tighter copy, faster pages, a structure that Google and AI assistants can actually read, without throwing away the content or the positions that came with it.
None of the four does that job. Point their AI at it and it does the only thing it knows how to do, generate a fresh site from a prompt with generic copy, in place of the one you spent a decade filling. Importers help a little and are refreshingly honest about their limits: STRATO's, for example, carries structure, text and images over from certain other builders and states plainly that a one-to-one move is not possible and that you will redo the design yourself afterwards. WordPress gives you the most options and they all mean the same thing in practice, a new theme plus a manual re-layout of every page, or an agency invoice. The AI is not part of that work at all.
So the market splits in a way no pricing page mentions. Starting a website is solved, cheaply, by AI. Modernising the website you already have is still manual, still expensive, and still what most established businesses actually need.
What all four have in common
The AI peaks on day one. Generation is the headline feature everywhere. Maintenance, the part that actually eats your evenings for the next five years, is still manual.
Generated copy is a starting point, not a finished site. It reads competently and says nothing specific. Leave it as-is and your page sounds like every other page produced from the same prompt.
Being found is a separate problem. This is the one owners underestimate. A server-log study by Vercel and MERJ found that none of the major AI crawlers execute JavaScript: GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot fetch script files but never run them. Content that only appears after scripts run is effectively blank to them. Pages that ship their content plainly in the HTML are on the safe side, which matters more each month as buyers ask an assistant instead of scrolling results. We unpack that in is your website ready for AI agents? and answer engine optimisation, and the file that tells assistants what your site is about is explained in what is llms.txt.
The other model: an AI for the site you already have
ShiftPress is built for exactly the customer the builders skip: the business that already has a website, years of content and something to lose. It takes the site you have, WordPress, IONOS, STRATO, Jimdo or something older, and migrates it to fast static pages that keep your design, your content and your rankings. Then chat becomes the way you change it.
There are two ways in, and you choose. Faithful is the default: the same design, the same words, the same URLs, so visitors and Google see continuity rather than a new site. Or ask for a redesign: your content and your rankings carry over, a modern design goes on top, and you never retype a page or rebuild a menu. Either way the twelve years of material stay, and the maintenance goes. A family vet practice went through exactly that, content kept, design rebuilt, in our practice case study. After that, modernising is not a project any more, it is a sentence: "make the services page look like the homepage", "shorten the about text", "add FAQs to every service page".
You type or say "add a section about the new service", "raise the prices on the services page", "the opening hours changed over the holidays". The AI reads the actual page, makes the edit and shows it to you as a suggestion to accept or reject. Nothing publishes on its own. Shared parts like the header, navigation and footer are marked, so one instruction changes them on every page in one go instead of forty times. There are no plugins to update, no database to back up, and the output is plain HTML that both Google and AI answer engines can read without running anything. See it working on editing your site just by talking.
Honest limits: this is not a drag-and-drop canvas, and it is not aimed at someone who wants to art-direct every pixel by hand. It is for owners who want the site to stay current without becoming a hobby, which in practice tends to mean local professional services: practices, firms and consultancies with a site that has to be right rather than experimental. If your platform is Wix, Squarespace or Webflow instead, the same comparison for those three is in Wix, Squarespace and Webflow AI.

Migrate my site ↗Key takeaways
- Builder AI in Germany is overwhelmingly generator AI: great on day one, absent on day two hundred.
- That makes it a strong deal for a new business and close to useless for one that already has pages, content and rankings.
- No builder will modernise the site you already have; the AI generates a replacement, and importers only carry content across before you redo the design by hand.
- IONOS has the widest generation and SEO toolkit; STRATO ships a close relative from the same group.
- Jimdo has gone furthest into chat-led creation, including a Jimdo app inside ChatGPT.
- WordPress has the real agent foundations, the Abilities API and the MCP Adapter, but they are developer work with genuine security homework.
- Generated copy needs rewriting, or your site reads like everyone else's.
- AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so plain HTML content is what gets quoted.
- If you want the AI to maintain the site, not just start it, you need a foundation an agent can safely read and change.

The bottom line
The German builders have made starting a website genuinely easy, and if you are founding something, take the deal. What none of them has solved is the harder half of the market: the business that already has a site, years of content and real rankings, and wants it modernised rather than replaced, then kept accurate for years without becoming a second job. That needs a foundation an AI can read and change safely, not an AI panel bolted to an editor built for human clicks. If that is you, start with migrating to a static site and see how the main platforms compare.
